If German is not your first language, it is highly likely that you will have to take a German language test or obtain a German language diploma as proof of your German skills if you want to work or study in a German-speaking country. The following is an overview of the most well known German language tests and diplomas:

Goethe Institut

The German language diplomas from Goethe Institut are the most well-known German language qualifications around the world. They are recognized in many countries and can be taken in Germany and abroad.

Goethe Institut offers the following tests and diplomas:

  • Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Fit in Deutsch 1 (for young people) – basic language skills. Contains a written examination and a short oral examination
  • Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1 – basic language skills. Contains a written examination and a short oral examination
  • Goethe-Zertifikat A2: Fit in Deutsch 2 (for young people) – ability to understand and be understood in simple German. Contains a written examination and a short oral examination
  • Goethe-Zertifikat A2: Start Deutsch 2 – ability to understand and be understood in simple German. Contains a written examination and a short oral examination
  • Goethe-Zertifikat B1: ZD für Jugendliche (German certificate for young people) – sound basic knowledge of everyday German. Contains a written examination and a short oral examination
  • Goethe Zertifikat B1: Zertifikat Deutsch – sound basic knowledge of everyday German. Contains a written examination and a short oral examination
  • Zertifikat Deutsch für den Beruf (German certificate for professional purposes) – independent command of the language. Contains a written examination and an oral examination
  • Goethe-Zertifikat B2 – advanced language skills- Contains a written examination and an oral examination
  • Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache (Test of German as a foreign language) – advanced level B2-C1. The TestDaF exam is the language qualification that facilitates admission to university and is recognized by every university in Germany. The test components are reading comprehension, listening comprehension, a written examination and oral expression.
  • Prüfung Wirtschaftsdeutsch International (International business German test) – knowledge of business German at an advanced level (C1). Contains a written examination and an individual oral examination
  • Goethe-Zertifikat C1 – very advanced language skills. Contains a written examination and an oral examination. At many German universities and further-education institutions, foreign applicants with a Goethe-Zertifikat C1 are exempted from the language entrance test.
  • Goethe-Zertifkat C2: Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung – highly advanced linguistic skills. Contains a written examination and an individual oral examination. The Goethe-Zertifikat C2: Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung enables foreign students to apply to German universities.
  • Kleines Deutsches Sprachdiplom – very highly advanced linguistic skills. Contains a written examination and an individual oral examination. The Kleines Deutsches Sprachdiplom enables foreign students to apply to German universities.
  • Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom – mastery of standard German to the highest level. Contains a written examination (including questions on set books the candidates have to read in advance) and an individual oral examination. The Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom enables foreign students to be admitted to German universities, qualifying them for courses there in the social sciences and German.

Österreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch (ÖSD)

The Österreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch (ÖSD) is the Austrian State diploma in German as a foreign language. The diplomas are available in all 6 levels from A1 to C2, including a business German diploma at level C2. They are recognized for immigration purposes and to study in universities and Austria and Germany.

Test Wirtschaftsdeutsch als Fremdsprache (WiDaf) – Business German as a foreign language

Test WiDaF was developed by the French-German chamber of commerce to assess the candidates’ level of business German. It consists in 150 multiple choice questions and awards a score from 0 to 990 points, corresponding to levels A1 to C2. The test can be taken in France, Germany and several other countries.
